Nate Ruch – Network Mentoring

Today I had the opportunity to hear Nate Ruch address Youth and Children Pastors about mentoring.
Nate is the Executive Director of University Relations at NCU.

Intentionally prepare for your future and the future of your church.
Nothing is instant.

Who you allow to influence you, is who you will become.

Think beyond your current place, your current position, and take care of the future.

Think about what God is doing next.
But that doesn’t mean that you leave what God is doing in you’re now.

Different types of mentors.
Therapist – Listens to your problems.
Coach – Gives you a list of things to do
Hero – Someone you can look up to.
When your looking for a mentor, you need all 3.

There are two functions of a mentor.

  1. Psychosocial – What’s going on in real time in real life.
  2. Career Development – True mentoring should always be about developing a person for ten years from now. True mentoring thinks about the future.

Range vs Density in your mentor relationships.
Range: Are all of your mentors staff at your church?
Density: Do all your mentors know each other, are they all the same?
Your mentorship should provide depth.

Move towards a network of mentoring
You can’t wait on your boss to mentor you into what you need to be in 10 years.
Your responsible to build your future.
You develop yourself right now for a future.

What are you doing now to prepare for your life in 10 years for now?
What are you doing to make sure that the people under your leadership are receiving mentoring?
