Sunday night is First Assembly’s annual candlelight service.
We didn’t want it to look like what a traditional candlelight service is.
Where everyone lights and holds a candle and sings, this little light of mine.
I’m just assuming, because I’ve never actually have been to a candlelight service, but that is what I picture in my head.
What it will look like.
We aren’t using our main stage at all.
Three small stages in the middle of the room.
Seating in a big circle around those stages.
Additional project so that everyone can see the visuals.
As you walk they walk in.
Simple, live nativity scene in lobby with joseph, mary, and 8 pound 6 ounce baby Jesus.
Then move into the auditorium, with low lights, and piano playing.
It begins.
- Music
- Poetry
- Spoken Word
- Solos
- Duets
- Scripture reading
Like popcorn on all three stages.
All about the miracles that surrounded Jesus’ birth.
Lots of them.
Then we tell God that we need a miracle in our life. This is where the candles come into play.
That’s all I can say.
I don’t want to ruin it.
Your turn.
Does your church do candlelight services?
What’s it look like?

The Pawnee UMC has a candlelight service every year. It’s my favorite memory of Christmas-eve in Pawnee. It’s beautiful. Your breakdown is almost the exact order that the UMC goes through their candlelight service (Music, Poetry, Spoken Word…), but we just had one main stage in front of the cross.
The candlelight services are definitely catching on, because even our Christian church in Denver has adopted the same practice.
Just be sure to have plenty of candles with those little drip guards.
