The truck i had in highschool had the same problem and it got pretty toxic in and around the vehicle when you werent moving. Having one reduces some of the toxins in your emissions. However, the converter contains precious metals that are mined in mainly foreign countries, especially Russia, in non environmentally friendly ways. So, my opinion.... its a wash either way. I know for a fact your car would not pass inspection in Texas without it. My advice would be to bite the bullet and get them to cut you a break or threaten to Twitter their name. Michigan doesn't have emissions test either... Honestly, our check engine has been coming on for a while, but don't really have the $ to do it. I know that I should probably fix it for the sake of the air around me, but we need the $$ in other places. I guess you need to ask yourself, how GREEN am I? And go from there... It just means you can drive and save and get it fixed before the next test. Well, they have it here in cook county anyway. Don't know about the rest of Illinois. Save up and get it fixed. If it's too expensive, look at getting a different car, perhaps. Sorry about your car woes. Car issues stink. Oh no, Illinois has the test. In Denver, we have to get emissions tests. Guess they don't have those in Illinois... yet. If our car doesn't pass the test, we can't renew our license plates. Aw… that’s sad.
